How to Kill Mold and Mildew
Mold and mildew are types of fungus, a living organism.
A variety of commercially-available biocides will kill mold, even stachybotrys black mold.
Note that merely killing the mold present is not enough. You must prevent any new mold from living and growing there. This will require that sources of water and moisture be found and eliminated.
Common sources of chronic moisture in a building include plumbing leaks, leaks of humid outside air into an air-conditioned space, leaks of cold winter air into a warm space, and roof leaks
Acute sources of large amounts of water include flooding and fire-protection and fire-fighting water. It is important to remove these large amounts of water as quickly as possible, in order to prevent mold and mildew growth secondary to fire and flood damage.
A dilute solution of chlorine bleach is commonly used to kill mold infestations. However, this must never be mixed with cleaning materials that contain ammonia, because the two chemicals together produce a toxic gas.
